Ilyushin 96

Not a fan of Ilyushin but Il-96 is still in production. Why is it not in game?

Do you have reliable sources for that? As far as we know they are not in production anymore.

Nevermind. The latest Cubana IL-96 was ex-SU...not a new build

Well I think they still are in production but not many orders. Wikipedia says they are, and this source says they will be produced as a freighter http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/russia/il-96.htmand http://www.airvectors.net/aviljet.html , but ilyushin´s website says nothing about there production  http://www.ilyushin.org/en/aircrafts/passenger/1174/. Planespotters say that a delivery has been made September 2014 and did not say anything that it would be the last il-96 http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/Ilyushin/ . This site http://www.aerospace-technology.com/projects/ilyushin-il-96/ says that they should have been 12 orders since june 2009 but planespotters show that there have been just 5 deliveries. My conclusion about il-96 is that it is still in production but I am not tottaly sure.

We need someone who knows Russian...

Ya govoru po Russki...but I do not see any Russian in the links he provided. I would be happy to translate as Google Translate gives some strange thing sometimes...

Also what is it with the Asshole Writer in this article, http://www.airvectors.net/aviljet.html

He keeps mentioning a Western aspect to every Soviet Design.

He probably thinks the Concorde and TU-144 in addition to the B-1 and TU-160 are the same even though one is way larger than the other and the TU-144 flew before the Concorde...

Sometimes I really dislike people who do not give credit to all of the things the Soviets and Russians invented on their own!

While I hate this kind of discussion, I got to ask where you see anything wrong in this article that makes you calling the author names?

Let’s be honest, Soviet designs most of the time were way behind those of their western “counterparts”. I’m not talking about copies here, as airframes for identical operational profiles naturally end up looking rather similar. You’ve got this in Tu-160 vs. B-1, Tu-144 vs. Concorde etc. pp.

As far as the Tu-144 is conerned, I suggest you take a look at what its race to first flight ahead of the Concorde really was worth.

My only professionell contact to Soviet designs was the MiG-29, and inside this lovely airframe -despite of being only a few years old - many things appeared to be kind of pre-historic. This in comparison to " my" aircraft, the F-4F which was basically a child of the 60’s.

At one of my jobs, my boss had a super-capacitor with LMZ on it because he bought it off eBay since there was no off-the-shelf equivalent super capacitor that was anywhere near the level of that monster - you can't just buy an F-15s super capacitor without tons of government scrutiny. I told him that this was in the Mig-29 (LMZ is one of the plants) and he laughed because we were working on aerospace applications that required such capacitors.

That being said, Russian designs have always been function over style. If you look at things, they are generally over engineered. Take a look inside a Kamaz truck that wins Dakar frequently, there is a reason it is so good at off-roading.

Here are the specific mentions I take offense to, "VC-10, which was in parallel development at the time; the first VC-10 wouldn't perform its initial flight until 1962, and so it is unclear if the similarity was coincidental or not." -

I will let you compare VC-10 to IL-62 specifications, but I will say that the IL-62 is basically 5-10% larger.

This is basically the TU-144 argument. I agree that the TU-144s rush to fly first caused tradgedy as did the Soviet space program's desire of having 3 astronauts without pressure suits (instead of 2 with pressure suits) to be first with a crew of 3.

For the IL-86: "basically the same broad configuration as the classic Boeing 707"

No it is NOT! 350 pax vs 219 pax maximum. It is absolutely insulting compare the 707 to the IL-86! The IL 86 is 16 meters longer!!

I could go on, but I feel that I have entered the ranting stage.

Having the same configuration is far from copying or whatever you’re seeing an insult in this.

As a matter if fact, the “basic configuration” from an engineers point of view IS the same, no matter if the size differs. He of course also could have said DC-8, 747 or CV-880. Much like a 757/767 is the same config than A300, or A320 is like 737 or Mercure.

I honestly don’t see the problem.

IL-86 is a twin aisle aircraft, but the 707 is single-aisle. Not the same configuration at all!

4 engines on the IL-86 was because the Soviet Engine designers could not make a good, large engine for a twin-jet IL-86 (or 96 for that matter). Furthermore, the IL-86 has a much larger cargo capacity and is 19 years newer.

At least compare the IL-86 to a DC-10 or A300 and one can honestly say that 4 inferior engines caused it to not be a twin (or tri) jet!

Whatever…

Like I said, I hate such discussions as they lead to nothing.

Merry Christmas.

sorry i was away for a few days. i read it on wikipedia. I also came across this link

http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/Ilyushin/Il-96 ,

which says 2 Il-96 are on order . That polet airline order is for cargo probably.

So I think it IS in production.

mmmh ... wikipedia is not really reliable. Anyhow a orderlist of 2 aircraft ... that's difficult.

They could be made available in AS with 1000 hour delivery time. :D
